In part 2 of the 11-part series, Allen Keller gives an overview of the HO-scale Reading model railroad layout built by Jim Hertzog, portraying the Pennsylvania coal mines set in the 1950’s. Nestled in his basement, the layout spans an area of 30 by 40 feet. The Reading’s walk in style layout is built on narrow shelves. The minimum radius is 30 inches and the bench work is open grid. Our visit to the Reading begins at Shamokin, Pennsylvania.

The Reading makes it way through the coal mines, coal-processing plants, and breaker buildings of the Coal Region. Jim has masterfully preserved the look of the coalfields 50 years ago in Pennsylvania. Tune in to the rest of Allen’s tour to travel back in time with the Reading Railroad.
