This chart will help you figure your gradients as you build your layout, remembering that a 2% grade is steep for a main line railroad and 4% is steep for narrow gauge, branch line, or industrial railroad. Model trains need pretty much the same gradients as real trains. This is a handy chart!

Degree of Curve to Scale Radius Chart PDF
This chart will help you compare real railroad curvature with your model curves. Real railroads need much more gradual curves than we modelers use. A ten degree curve is sharp for a real main line railroad and model curves a generally much tighter that that. You are going to want to check this out!
