Modeler Martin Tärnrot demonstrates a technique for painting figures to add to the structures and scenery in your layout. It’s called high-contrast priming or artificial shadowing, and it gives more dynamics to the colors on your figures.

Instead of using traditional gray or white primer, Martin uses black primer. The starting point is all matte-black figures. Martin demonstrates two methods for achieving a high-contrast foundation. The first is dry brushing white. The second is spraying (using an air brush or spray can) white from a high angle. Then he paints the figures using a thinned paint, so the black-and-white primer shows through. The results are impressive!
